Types of BA Projects -2

8. Infrastructure Upgrade Projects

Objective: Modernize the company’s technological foundation, such as transitioning from on-premise systems to cloud solutions.

Example: A bank decides to move its operations to the cloud. The BA:

  • Gathers requirements for the migration process.

  • Documents the functionality of the on-premise system for comparison.

  • Plans and oversees data migration to the cloud.

  • Tests the cloud-based system to ensure no performance issues arise.

  • Coordinates with teams to roll out the upgraded system.


9. Compliance or Regulatory Projects

Objective: Ensure the company’s software systems comply with new laws, regulations, or industry standards.

Example: A financial institution must meet new government requirements for data privacy. The BA:

  • Analyzes the current system for gaps in compliance.

  • Works with legal teams to interpret regulations.

  • Documents changes needed to meet compliance.

  • Coordinates with developers to implement updates.

  • Tests and audits the system to verify compliance.


10. Business Process Reengineering (BPR) Projects

Objective: Improve existing processes by redesigning workflows and integrating better software solutions.

Example: A retail chain wants to streamline its inventory management. The BA:

  • Analyzes current processes to identify inefficiencies.

  • Proposes workflow changes and recommends automation tools.

  • Documents the new process flow and ensures alignment with business goals.

  • Works with IT to integrate the updated system.


11. Integration Projects

Objective: Connect multiple software systems to enable seamless data sharing and improved functionality.

Example: A company acquires another business and needs to integrate their customer databases. The BA:

  • Identifies overlapping functionalities and gaps between systems.

  • Documents integration requirements and maps data flows.

  • Tests the integrated system to ensure data consistency and performance.


12. Migration Projects

Objective: Move data and systems from one platform to another, often for scalability or cost savings.

Example: A company decides to migrate from a legacy CRM to Salesforce. The BA:

  • Maps data fields in the old and new systems.

  • Coordinates with IT to execute the migration plan.

  • Tests the new system to ensure data accuracy post-migration.

  • Trains users on the new platform.


13. Digital Transformation Projects

Objective: Overhaul the organization’s processes and tools to embrace modern, digital solutions.

Example: A traditional retailer wants to launch an e-commerce platform. The BA:

  • Analyzes current business processes and gaps.

  • Documents the requirements for the new platform.

  • Coordinates the development, testing, and deployment of digital solutions.


14. Disaster Recovery or Business Continuity Projects

Objective: Prepare software systems to handle unexpected failures and ensure business continuity.

Example: A company implements a disaster recovery system to protect its critical operations. The BA:

  • Identifies potential risks and documents disaster scenarios.

  • Specifies backup and recovery requirements.

  • Tests the system to ensure minimal downtime during disruptions.


15. Innovation and R&D Projects

Objective: Experiment with cutting-edge technologies like AI, blockchain, or IoT to find new business opportunities.

Example: A logistics company wants to explore drone delivery. The BA:

  • Researches drone regulations and potential applications.

  • Collaborates with R&D teams to document requirements.

  • Proposes pilot projects to test the technology.


This might feel overwhelming but..remember not every companies does all these projects. Try to think of each project as a way for company's attempt at adding value or cutting costs.

Also remember, each project will be approved by a steering committee/management after a cost-benefot analysis.
